Day 4
18x36 oil on canvas
Mission Point

12x12 oil on canvas

12x12 oil on canvas
We got to Mission Point a little later in the morning.  There always seems to be something strange about the water far receded.  The canvas I had was 18x36, much larger than I have worked with in the past.  I used a large brush to lay in the sky.  Because I used the larger brush I had to use some medium to carry the paint across the big canvas.   I think by using the medium, it created a mood representative of the vast landscape.  Working with the thin paint in the background, allowed me to move to a thicker paint toward the foreground. The rocks posed a challenge for me.  I started to lay them in and it was not working, so I decided to take a break from the canvas.  I had brought along two 12x12 small canvas.  Because I had mixed all my colors, I was able to work on the smaller painting quickly.  I was very pleased with how they worked.  I then was able to return to the large canvas and state the rocks as needed to solve the painting.  It was a successful day of hot messy painting.
